Rainbow Vision

$10.00

How do you feel when you see a rainbow? For me, the light refraction is a symbol of hope and safety. When I’m in a new place and uncertain of whether I’m welcome to be myself, it is a beacon of safety. Whether it’s a sticker in a window or a pin on someone’s lanyard, I feel relief. Pairing the brilliant rainbow with a black and white vintage television set creates an obvious division in the image. As if there is a bridge between old and new.

Television was the first visual media where we got to see our likeness combined with a more everyday experience (sitcoms, news, etc). For many outside the norm (sexual/gender identity, race, size, etc.), we had to wait a long time to see ourselves represented in that media. Even though so much of the population was diverse in many ways, that diversity was not valued the same as the conventional majority. For the minority, that distinction like the color difference depicted here was very clear.

This collage symbolizes media catching up to match the brilliance of this world and the diversity in it. You may have noticed that there are no images of people in the collage image. That is purposeful to highlights how there are multiple truths in media. Yes, the representation has increased but also there are still harmful stereotypes present, hateful rhetoric, and major that need to be addressed.

Perfect gift for anyone that wants a symbol of safety and keeps fighting for the underrepresented in this world.

This is a handcrafted paper collage from books and magazines like LIFE, National Geographic, etc.

You're purchasing a 5×7 png digital download file. No physical item will be shipped to you and the frame is not included.
